Hiking the snowy trails of Colorado

Can you believe six weeks have passed since Peyton left us? I sure can’t. A couple weeks ago I really started missing him. Mom and Dad have done a good job keeping me busy, but a few weeks ago I finally realized he was gone and not coming back. I went for a walk with my friends Cheney and Sampson and a little later that day Cheney came over to play. We had a great time, but it made me realize their was a huge void in my life, Peyton. You hear that everyone grieves differently and I guess it just took me a little longer to realize how much apart of me left with Peyton. We think of him and miss him every day! I am happy to say a wise dog named Opie told me Peyton is always with us in hearts! We love you Peyton. Ok, hopefully that didn’t make all of you cry because that is not what I was intending to do.

Handsome Peyton

Peyton's Birthday Tribute

A couple days after Peyton left us on his journey a large box came addressed to the both of us. I couldn’t stand the anticipation of what could be inside. It took forever for the pawrents to get inside and start pulling out the goodies. The box was filled with Chuck-It balls of every shape and color, Chuck-It Frisbees, and even a collapsible water bowl. It was PAWESOME! You see this nice lady named Kathy from Chuck-It found Peyton’s blog and got in touch with my Mom. She mailed out this box of goodies for us to enjoy. The sad part is Peyton had already left us by the time the package arrived. I just know he would want me to enjoy all these toys for the both of us! So I am enjoying them every minute I can!

For those of you that don’t know, Opie and I are trying to break the world record of Augie the golden retriever. Augie has been able to fit five tennis balls in his mouth at one time! I definitely think Opie is the one that will tie or break this record because he has the patience that I don’t. I can only focus on one ball at a time! Mom thought if she got all of my Chuck-It balls together it might get me in the mood to try this record breaking thing. The funny thing is she even tried to load them in my mouth and I kept spitting them out and chewing on just one! Sorry Mom! One of these days I promise to focus!!!

One, Two, Three, Four, Five.....

One is just right

Now on to our weekend adventure. We decided to go on a hike. We are fortunate to live in Colorado and we can be to the base of the mountains in about 15 minutes with Dad driving (30 for anybody else). We started on a hike that split into two separate trails. I think we picked the wrong one. I almost killed Dad several times. There were many steep areas that wouldn’t bother someone on a warm summer day, but apparently Dad was a little bothered because most of the trail was ice packed. I could walk on it just fine, but Dad made me slow down every time I got to the end of my leash. I started the hikewith just my leash on and the first time I almost pulled Dad down he made me put my Halti collar on so I wouldn’t pull so much! Mom was a whole different story, she had trouble walking just by herself. We kept looking back checking on her to make sure she was still behind us upright. So the two lessons we learned on our adventure where: hiking with a golden retriever is better suited when the snow and ice has melted and when you come to a sign that reads Summit Trail or Nature Trail-go for the Nature Trail!

What a view

Should we go down that mountain?

Happy boys

Whoa! Dillon! Pawesome post, dude! I can’t believe you got all of those balls! I haven’t yet been able to get five balls in my mouth. But, I will keep trying.

You got to go on such a cool hike! Colorado looks so beautiful. My mom went backpacking there once when she was 18…Yikes, that was a loooooooonnnnng time ago. Right around the time John Denver’s Rocky Mountain High song was popular. It was the first time she saw pointy mountains. She grew up in Pennsylvania in the Allegheny Mountains, but those are the very old roundy-top variety.

You climbed so far up that mountain, you were probably really, really, close to Peyton. I sure do miss him, too. I am glad you are still keeping in touch, though. I wouldn’t mind having a cool brother, like you.

Stay strong and give your pawrents a sloppy lick from me. : )

    Hey there Dillon!

What a great post and great pictures! We enjoyed them very much. What a cool company to send you all those Chuck It balls! People amaze me at times with their kindness. It’s very touching.

Hugs to you and your pawrents…

What great pictures of your hike, Dillon! How cool that you and your pawrents can hike in the mountains so easily. We don’t get either pointy or round mountains here in Illinois. Keep trying to beat that tennis ball record!

    Hi Dillon

I see you and your pawrents are doing your best to stay happy but that you really miss Peyton. So do we, and yes, your story did make my mum cry. The birthday tribute. The chuck it ball package. You and Peyton have touched so many lives.

All those colorful chuck it balls look like so much fun! I may have to get a couple for Jack Attack 🙂 We love you, Dillon!

    We miss him too Dillon.

But I’m glad to see that you’re there for your pawrents and taking such good care of them on the trail and at home. That’s why we’re here right? To look out for these silly humans.

Oooh, can’t wait to get back to Colorado. We hope that you and Harper will come to our Tripawds pawty in the spring! Keep in touch!

Hey Dillon – Your pictures are just pawesome! We can see that you are really trying to beat the world’s record with Opie and we are rootin’ for you and Opie (even if it’s only 1 ball you can get in your mouth) I bet Peyton was right there with you when you were on the hiking trail with your pawrents – looking out for all of you and making sure that everything was ok. We can’t even imagine how much you must miss Peyton. Just know that we all miss him so much too!
